Spout Pouch Material Guide
There is no best film for spout pouches. There is a best film for your product, and it depends on what the formula does to the package over its shelf life — not on thickness.
The four structures
- PET/PE — printable outer film with a PE sealing layer
- PET/AL/PE — adds an aluminium layer for light and oxygen
- PET/AL/PA/PE — adds nylon for mechanical strength
- Mono-PE — a single-material structure built around PE
Each one changes the barrier, the strength and the recyclability of the finished pouch. Which one applies is decided by the product, not by this list.
Three questions
- Is the formula sensitive to light or oxygen?
- How large is the pouch, and how far does it travel?
- Does the destination market require recyclability?
Answers to those three usually narrow it to one or two options. Send them with the product and we will confirm the structure.
What goes wrong when the structure is wrong
A barrier that is too low shows up as a product that changes before its date. A structure that is heavier than needed shows up as a unit price that never had to be that high.
Neither is visible at sampling, which is why the structure is tested with the actual formula before mass production.
